# Choose Default or Direct mode

> When to list the consequences yourself, and when to let Eevo weigh the options itself.

Both modes take the same request: a context, options and stakeholders. They differ in who spells out the consequences. Default mode is recommended for supporting agentic and human judgement; Direct mode is for high-volume decisions and custom tasks.

| | Default | Direct |
|---|---|---|
| `mode` | `"default"`, or leave it out | `"direct"` |
| You send | the options, each with its `consequences` | the options |
| Eevo returns | each stakeholder's best option, with a probability per option, plus each option's expected value with a range, and each consequence's size | each stakeholder's best option, with a probability per option |
| Model calls | about n(n − 1)/2 per stakeholder for n consequences, plus overlap checks | one per stakeholder |
| Typical time | 5–70 seconds; past about 50 seconds you get 202 and fetch the result by id | a few seconds |

## Use Default mode when

- an agent or a person is making a judgement call and needs to see why an option is best: which consequences contribute most to it and how sure Eevo is;
- the consequences are in unlike units: trust against cost, lives against money, many small effects against one large one;
- you already know the consequences and want them weighed, not guessed.

## Use Direct mode when

- you make many decisions and the context says enough, for example an agent deciding whether to ship, escalate or wait thousands of times a day;
- the consequences cannot be named concretely, or you want a fast answer per stakeholder and do not need to see the reasons.

If each option's expected value follows from the facts by plain arithmetic and logic, with no judgement about how much a consequence matters, compute it instead. Consequences that are all in money still need Eevo when sizing or comparing them takes judgement.

## Switching

Remove each option's `consequences` list and set `mode: "direct"`, or add them and leave `mode` out. Sending consequences in Direct mode, or options without any in Default mode, is a 400 that says which.
